The history of slavery is a long story, and spans many centuries and continents. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact year that slavery began, however most historians trace roots of this practice back roughly 11,000 years.
Throughout the Middle Ages slavery was also taking root in Asia as Islamic invasions of India resulted in the enslavement of hundreds of thousands of Indians. During this same time period in China, documents show that royals from the Tang Dynasty purchased many European and Jewish slaves.
Despite what you likely know about slavery in the Americas, you may not know that the majority of African slaves were concentrated in the Caribbean to work on plantations. European colonies depended on African slaves on the islands to produce their sugar and coffee. Many African slaves were sold by Africans to owners in both Brazil and the Spanish Americas for both field and household work.
Though at many points in history, liberators have worked to free slaves, the Abolitionist Movement in the United States was different, as it aimed to put an end to the practice of Slavery worldwide and forever.
The Abolitionist Movement to end the practice of Slavery led to the Civil War. There were over one million Caucasian American casualties of the Civil War. More Caucasian American deaths than in all other U.S. wars combined.
The end of Slavery in the United States was not the result of an African revolt or a black revolution or some BLM night of looting in Beverly Hills. Blacks in the United States of America were freed by whites, and at the cost of many, many white lives.
